Every month I go to LA for work. I go like clockwork, every 4 weeks and for the past couple years I have been in LA on Valentine’s Day. My husband and I either celebrate before I leave, or after I get home, depending on what day it falls on. This has been our constant struggle with Valentine’s Day since we’ve been married.
And I know, that Valentine’s Day isn’t a huge deal, and personally I don’t really care about Valentine’s Day now that I am married, though it seemed like such a huge deal when I was single, but I would rather have flowers on March 18th, or July 28th or any other random day that the day that people feel obligated to buy them. I’d rather have some hand picked wild flowers than an overpriced bundle of roses with a spray of baby’s breath (but I won’t complain if he gets me them).
Last year, my husband got wise and decided to buy me a potted plant. Red tulips. He was sort of bummed when they died a few weeks later, but he doesn’t really get how bulbs work, and in the summer I uprooted all the bulbs (which had multiplied by then) and repotted them into larger pots. I noticed last week tons of little green stems peeking out from the soil! Tulips, the gift that keeps on giving.
So I thought since Valentine’s Day is approaching, I would come up with a few ways to keep the romance alive. You don’t have to be a certified romantic to make a day centered entirely about romance special. All you really need is effort.
I know that with jobs and kids and busy lives it’s hard to find time to be spontaneous. I get it. I book my life so far ahead, I hardly have time to throw it all out the window and decide it’s time to be spontaneous. But what I do do, that actually works insanely well is, I PLAN to be spontaneous. I have no idea what I am going to do on those days I book out for spontaneity and fun, but I know that whatever comes my way, I can handle it. By setting aside the time you give yourself the opportunity to be spontaneous and in the moment.
Let’s be clear, romance isn’t what you see in the movies. It’s not super cheesy and over the top. It’s not created in a lab and there is no formula for it. Being romantic is simply putting your partner’s wants and needs above your own. It’s about being selfless and doing something for someone else without expecting anything in return. That’s what makes romance so special. Pay attention to your partner’s wants and needs. Are they chocoholics? Buy them some uber fancy chocolates at a specialty store! Are they into homemade gifts? You’ll get major points for a handpicked bouquet than a big frilly store bought one. Bottom line? Think about what they would love instead of what you think they might like.
Like I said before about the handpicked flowers, being creative on Valentine’s Day is HUGE. Handmade chocolate covered strawberries and a nice bottle of sparkling wine will go a long way, even if you’re on a budget. A handmade card, with a little bit of effort, or even turning the living room into a “movie theater” with popcorn, snacks and a romantic movie, snuggling under a blanket will get you MAJOR brownie points. It’s not about who spends the most, it’s about the thought that was put into it.
Being attentive is all about the setup. Pay attention, listen. People give clues about what they really want, even if they can’t come out and say it. Most people just want to be doted on, and although I think it’s special to be doted on all year round, if you can’t handle that, make sure you don’t skimp on Valentine’s Day.
Let’s be honest, Valentine’s Day can lead to things getting hot and steamy, and while there should never be any expectation on where the night will go, it’s nice to be prepared.
