We’ve lived here for 5 years, and since it’s a rental, we’ve very rarely ever upgraded anything. I save all those brilliant ideas for my Pinterest board for when we finally break down and buy something. But through the years we have updated a few things out of necessity and aesthetic reasons.
When we moved in, I took the liberty of changing out all the showerheads to those uber fancy multi function ones with constant pressure and big spray. I couldn’t deal with that lame trickle of water when washing my hair.
When I was pregnant, during what felt like the hottest summer of my life, my husband replaced all the overhead lights with big fancy ceiling fans.
And yet for some reason we never thought of replacing the kitchen faucet. I used that horrible basic faucet for 5 years. I filled a filter pitcher and stuck it in the fridge every day for 5 years. I washed dishes in the sink without a pressurized shower head sprayer for 5 years. What was wrong with me?
So we bit the bullet and installed an Xtract Water Filtration System a couple weekends ago. And by we I mean my husband because I was hardly allowed to sneak into the kitchen long enough to snap before and after photos! He insisted on installing it himself, so I sat on the couch and relaxed!
This is at least 7 years of grime… but nothing a little bit of elbow grease couldn’t fix…
Then to clean out all the stuff from under the sink. Check out this mess…
But it was good that we did that because we got a lot of old stuff tossed out and got to reorganize the area after the installation was complete.
So gross… we cleaned all that up as best as we could, but those rust stains were pretty stubborn. If we owned this, a nice new coat of paint would have fixed this nicely.
Then hubby got to work…
So first thing I want to say about this upgrade and WHY DID IT TAKE US 5 YEARS?!
The Xtract Water Filtration System is not only pretty, but insanely functional from the high arched spout (that maneuvers over piles of dirty dishes insanely well!) to the built in water filter so we can get bottled water quality straight from the tap. I am all about making my environmental footprint smaller and my wallet fatter – so no more water bottles for us! We have reusable ones that we fill up before we leave the house everyday – straight from the tap!
And no more going into the fridge for a cold drink, only to find the pitcher with not even a sip left to spare… *cough cough*…
I still use my old filter pitcher, but now just as a water pitcher for cold water. Even our ice cubes taste better!
It took my husband about 2 hours from start to finish, and he has very limited plumbing experience (but he’s very handy around the house) so I think if you know how to work a power tool and know the difference between and a Phillips head and a Flat head screwdriver, you’ll probably be OK attempting this DIY.
I even tested our drinking water (using the H2O OK Plus kit) before and after this, since the Xtract System is able to eliminate most common chemicals better than other drinking systems. Plus select pharmaceuticals, lead, mercury, pesticides, insecticides and herbicides. Betcha didn’t know those were lurking in your tap water. So gross. It’s also insane quick, boasting almost twice as much water follow as a fridge filter, with the filter lasting 6 months.
We’re lucky out here in the country that we don’t have the city water… and our tap water isn’t actually too bad. But even with decent tap water, the filtration system still managed to eliminate even trace amounts of chemicals!
Plus getting all sciency was sort of fun.
Anyway, what do you think of our new kitchen sink makeover?! Pretty swanky eh?
