Can you believe summer is almost over? I’m excited for Abbey to start preschool this fall, but I am sort of bummed that the season of the grill is coming to an end. It’s technically grill season most of the year here in San Diego, but we get the most bang out of our BBQ from May to September. Lots of burgers, steaks, chicken and the most valuable player: the hot dog.
Around here, we’re a Hebrew National family. We love those kosher dogs, and after a long day of work, phoning it in on some hot dogs sounds pretty good to me. Most of the time, I make dinner from scratch, except for Pizza Tuesday, when we order out and my hubby geeks out on Destiny with his guy friends. Sometimes the idea of cooking an elaborate meal in the heat is enough to make you run for the hills, and that’s where “haute dogs” come in.
It’s a cute play on words that includes any sort of topping that isn’t “normal”, like ketchup or mustard. My family isn’t super adventurous so anything around here can take a hot dog from drab to fab! Personally, I like to wrap my haute dogs in bacon, grill them up, and pile them high with grilled onions, spicy mustard, and sauerkraut. My husband likes his with just yellow mustard; my kids like them plain or with ketchup.
I knew this week was going to be a doozy, so I stopped by Target for our monthly Target haul and grabbed a bunch of haute dog fixings to satisfy the pickiest of eaters’ cravings. I know you don’t wanna see the load of groceries I grabbed, cuz that’s boring. So I’ll save you from that and just show you the finished products.
A haute dog for every palate! Can you find mine?
I even grabbed some new BBQ toys for the new grill my husband got on Father’s Day this year. This grill is seriously the best thing we’ve splurged on lately! It grills everything perfectly, every time. He needed some new tongs, a BBQ spatula, and a heavy-duty grill brush to keep this beauty looking her best.
What are your favorite toppings for a haute dog?
