This Friday Abbey and I have an appointment at a local preschool to come check it out and take a tour. I am equal parts excited for her (and who are we kidding, me too!) and sad that my baby is growing up. The first day of school is a big deal and I’m trying to mentally prepare myself for it.
Audrey starts school the day after Labor Day, and although she’s not here 24/7, she will end up doing quite a bit of homework here. With 2 kids in school (though, preschool doesn’t usually include homework) I knew we would need a space for them to sit and be able to concentrate on the tasks at hand. So I headed out to Walmart to tackle Back to School like a boss, and grabbed all the things we would need for the new school year.
I think it’s really important for kids to have their own designated space, even in small spaces. If you don’t have an office or desk, you can easily make that happen with a simple DIY Homework Station. Check out ours below and read my tips for acing back to school yourself.
DIY Homework Station
Both of my girls are very creative, and love lots of bright colors. We picked out all kinds of supplies in lots of fun colors so that their space was one they actually wanted to spend time in. A drab boring space isn’t going to keep their attention and make them excited about doing their homework to get to use all the fun supplies. We filled up out Homework Station with lots of crayons, colored pencils, fun scissors, school glue, glue sticks and brightly colored notebooks. We also bought a HUGE pack of mechanical pencils because it seemed like last year, every single day I heard the question, “Do you have a pencil I can use?“. Problem solved.
I even grabbed a box of Kleenex tissues and a pack of pocket tissues for their backpacks. My kids are the kind of children who will use ANY excuse to get out of ANY chore. No runny noses will stop them tackling that pile of 5th grade homework now! Take that sneaky children!
As an added bonus, you can make them some cute after school snacks to help feed those hungry brains while they are busy working. Try my S’mores Trail Mix with Free Printables!
They have everything they need packed into this really cute little wooden carrier I nabbed at a craft store. I love the chalkboard front, cuz I can write anything I want on it. Plus the handle allows me to move it off the dining table when it’s time to eat and everything can stay organized and together.
They have no excuses now and are able to tackle going back to school this fall, like a boss. And don’t forget to save those box tops for education!
