Summer is in full swing! Is your house ready for it? Living in a small space, our house gets cluttered on a daily basis. My husband always tells us, whatever we bring in, we need to bring the same amount out to eliminate extra clutter, mess and general stuff piling up. It can be difficult living in under 1000 square feet with 4 people, but we make it work, and with a few of our tips you can too!
In the summer lemons are in season, and when summer gives you lemons, you make lemon cleaner. Or something like that. I am a big advocate for saving money, being more green and making your own cleaning solutions with everyday household items and ingredients, so when lemons are super cheap, take advantage and make some summer friendly cleaning solutions!
- Place lemon peels in a mason jar and fill with white vinegar, for a DIY cleaning solution.
- Sprinkle salt on half a lemon to help polish brass and copper.
- Dip half a lemon in baking soda and scrub your counters. (May discolor natural stones)
- Slice up a lemon and add to a gallon of hot water and soak your cotton whites to help remove stains.
- Clean mineral deposits on metal pots by boiling water with lemon slices in them.
- Mix Cream of Tartar with lemon juice to form a paste and scrub grout with a toothbrush for a whiter look.
- Run a hot load in the dishwasher with lemon juice to remove rust and stains.
And so many more!
Beach/Pool Strip Down Area
If you’ve got kids who think they are fish like mine, a strip down area is a must-have! You can make it a secluded place on the porch, or even a designated bathroom. Before you head out, place clean towels and fresh clothes there, so when kids get home from the beach/pool/lake/river/muddy backyard sprinkler fun, they can hose off in the shower, dry off with fresh clean towels and change into their new clothes for the rest of the evening. Keeping it in one area saves the rest of the house from getting wet and sandy/muddy/dirty, and makes clean up much easier. Don’t forget to keep a hamper in there for wet stuff so you can do a muddy load when the fun is done! Don’t forget to use your O-Cedar EasyWring Spin Mop & Bucket System to clean up the messy floors!
Going Through Old Clothes
Spring may be the time to declutter your house, but summer is a great time to declutter your wardrobe! As it gets warmer, you start to wear your warm weather clothes and can toss a lot of those winter clothes that don’t fit and you won’t be wearing again come the colder months. It will make room for more tanks, shorts and flowy tops too! Donate the clothes to a shelter, or your local thrift stores for an added karma bonus!
Clean those Floors
Sure, we sweep a couple times a day, spot mop here and there a few times a week, but what your floors really need is a good deep cleaning. Start by moving everything you can off your tile/laminate/hardwood floors and really sweep every corner and inch of it. Get as much of the dust and dirt up with the broom, then go over it once more for good measure. Next, spot mop and scrub any tough, stuck on bits and smudges with some cleaner, hot water and a sturdy sponge. Finally, use the O-Cedar EasyWring Spin Mop & Bucket System to mop your entire floor. The spinning action helps keep the mop clean, spinning out dirt and grime and keeps it damp, but not wet, reducing drying time. Use with your favorite cleaner, or see above and make your own! Once the floor is dry, replace all the items and start on the next room. Aren’t clean floors lovely?
Dusting the Fans
As you reach for those ceiling fan switches on the wall, take a good look at your fan blades. Are they covered in dust like mine? Want an easier way to clean them, without getting dust bunnies all over your head and floor? Use a pillowcase, insert the fan blade into the pillowcase, grip tightly and pull! All the dust bunnies are now safely trapped inside your pillowcase! Repeat with remaining blades.
