A few weeks ago I was given the opportunity to review Jillian Lauren’s new book, Everything You Ever Wanted. Before husband and kids, I could devour a book in a weekend, turning the pages like my life depended on knowing the next sentence, reading the next chapter, devouring each word like a gasping breath. Nowadays, I am lucky if I can get through a chapter without having to reread an entire page twice.
I was excited to read this book, because I heard amazing things about her previous book, Some Girls , a memoir about her life as a member of the Prince of Brunei’s harem.
In her new book, Lauren talks about meeting her husband (um… he’s a rockstar in the band Weezer) and her journey from her past life as a member of a harem to her current one, as a member of the PTA (yes, really). She battles reproductive problems, tries out new age remedies, and eventually decides to adopt. Lauren’s writing is raw, eloquent and addictive, pulling me into her life, her story and making me turn the pages as if I didn’t have a choice.
After they get their son from Ethiopia, she then has to learn how to navigate raising a special needs child, and all the battles that come with that. She fights tooth and nail to make him feel safe in this world.
Lauren writes so beautifully, you wish that she was your best friend and she were pouring her heart out to you over coffee on a Wednesday afternoon at a local cafe. She’s raw, and she’s real and she tells it like it really is. She shares with you how she’s been there and isn’t afraid of her choices and past mistakes. Her Happily Ever After doesn’t exist in reality and that’s what makes it so real and so true. I sort of love her.
The book is funny in parts, pulls at the heart strings and tears at your soul, and it’s a perfect gift for anyone who’s been a mom or wanted a second chance at the life they’ve always dreamed of.
I’m not usually one for memoirs, but this one sucked me in and hasn’t let go.
