I am a HUGE book nerd. I’ve been know to completely engross myself into a book so deeply, that I’ve forgotten to make dinner, handle bath and bedtime and just be generally productive. Cramming my nose into a book has always been the ultimate getaway for me, whether to deal with stress, boredom, or just craving some adventure to an otherwise pretty normal life. So when Kobo sent me their new Kobo Glo HD eReader to test out, I jumped at the chance.
I’ve always been one to shy away from eReaders because to me, holding a book, smelling a book and seeing all the books I’ve read lined up in my bookcase have been some of the best parts of reading. I know it’s sort of pompous and arrogant to display all my books for my guests to admire, but I sort of love answering “YES! Sometimes twice!” when they ask if I’ve read them all.
Some time ago, reading fell out of fashion and it became “uncool” to read. It’s a shame, and I have no idea why. It totally makes me sad when people say “I hate to read!”, because reading is amazing.
So back to this Kobo Glo HD. I was pretty hesitant straight off the bat, I mean an eReader? That’s the exact opposite of what I love about books! It gives me NONE of my favorite things! So I went into the challenge already heavily voting on books to win…
I gave myself 7 days, and downloaded 2 books. Yes Please by Amy Poehler and Bossypants by Tina Fey. Hey? What can I say? I LOVE me some beautiful, funny, strong women! I recommend both books if you’re itching for a Summer Read.
I had a little issue with the Kobo Glo HD connecting to my WiFi and syncing my device to load my books at first. It was sort of a pain for me in this instant gratification life we live, but after 2-3 tries it worked fine. It works over WiFi, so if yours is shady, keep trying. The device wouldn’t let me connect over unsecured Wifi either (Starbucks, Chick-Fil-A, etc), but I was just trying to show a friend how it works vs actually needing it.
Once I downloaded the books on the website, and synced my device, the books were on my Kobo and ready to read! You can also download the Kobo app, and read from any device – but I really ended up loving my Kobo Glo HD. I took it to work and read Yes Please between clients, at home I read it while I cooked dinner, I read it on the go while waiting for the school bell to ring or for my mom to show up to lunch. I also love how it tells you how far along you are in the book and approximate amount of time you have left until you’re finished.
The problem I’ve always had with my previous eReader, was glare and it was just TOO bright, making it very hard to read in sunlight and a pain when I was reading next to a sleeping husband. It also was ALWAYS DEAD, meaning I had to bring a charger with me anywhere that wasn’t close by. The Kobo Glo HD has NO GLARE at all and looks very much like the page of a book does. At night I was able to tone down the brightness and really get a nice dim face to read on without disturbing Charlie. Plus the it holds a charge for 2 months! I found myself reading more!
I don’t usually bring books around with me, because they end up getting dirty or torn floating around my purse. When I would go on a trip, I would have to bring multiple books to keep me entertained on flights and relaxing by a pool, which took up valuable space. Really the only reason I liked having the actual book was to sort of show off what I was reading. Sorta lame, right? Hahaha! But books and magazines weigh A LOT! And a Kobo Glo HD weighs nothing – like 7 oz of nothing. It’s small and compact and wonderful.

Seriously, I am a huge “real book snob” and even I was sold on this eReader. I tried to fight it, but it’s just too convenient and awesome.
