Abbey and I started taking dance lessons a few months ago at a dance studio here in San Diego called Jibe Studios! It’s been such an amazing experience for us to be a part of the Jibe family – it’s created a creative outlet for Abbey, gets us out of the house, and gives me a fun reason to exercise and talk to grownups! So I sat down and talked to Abby Neves one of the founders and owners of Jibe Studios to see what makes this place so special.
I have known Abby Neves since I was about 13 years old. (In the above pic, she’s sitting on the desk and I’m looking at the camera!) We used to dance at the same studio as kids and went to school together for the better part of our adolescence. She’s fun, personable, an amazing dancer and an all around great person to know. That’s just how I feel about her as a personal friend and not even as someone I pay to give me dance lessons!
Abby opened Jibe Studios with her now sister-in-law Jennifer Hill in 2006, after she realized there wasn’t a “safe place for girls aged 14 and up”, she says. With over 29 years of dancing under her belt, she’s a good person to trust with your children’s and your own dance education.
As a teacher, she is kind, patient and understanding. I appreciate that, especially after 15 years out of the dance game! I love that Jibe has classes for Adults as well as the kids, and that even the littlest dancers have a place at the studio! What started out as a “performing company” of just 20 “crew” members, has turned into a thriving studio with over 120 dancers! The current facility has 2 studios, a dressing room, a a generous lobby with lots of room for moms to watch their littles practice!
Abbey and Jennifer make dancing fun, and a great learning experience for the kids. I’ve already noticed Abbey has a better sense of self, has expanded her creativity, her outgoing attitude and her freedom of expression! She loves going to dance class and has a blast! I love that her class is at the same time as my class – so I can get in a good 45 minutes of dancing while she’s being cared for and learning a new skill!
When asked, Abby says her influences are the dancers themselves, watching and seeing what they are capable of, pushing them to be better with their own skills. Citing Travis Wall, Greg Russell, Betzi Rowe and our former dance teacher Jennifer Toneck as her professional influences, she adds, “And anyone who has ever made dancing fun!”.
When asked her favorite type of dance, Abby cites that “literally ANY dance” is her favorite to perform, but it was tap dancing that started this entire journey for her. She started dancing around “4ish” and has never stopped.
I completely understand and agree!
When I was a kid, dance was a HUGE part of my life and my studio family were some of my favorite people and influences as to how I wanted to be and act. I love that I get to share that lifestyle with my daughter and that she really enjoys it! She’s totally my mini me!
Spring Session has been going on for 2 weeks, and will reopen on Monday, April 13th after our Spring Break – (so you totally have time to learn anything you’ve missed!)AND there is still time to register if you’re looking for a great dance studio in San Diego – or feel free to drop by one of the classes and pay a drop in rate! It’s a FANTASTIC workout and there are many skill levels offered for all ages! Check out their class schedule here! I would LOVE to see your faces in my Thursday morning tap class!
Jibe’s class rates are insanely reasonable – and they offer discounts for multiple classes, so if you’re eyeballing a few, take a chance and get a great rate! We absolutely LOVE our classes.
Jibe also offers events, like Jibe Night In – a parents date night evening where the kids get to hang out at the studio and watch a movie, play games and eat pizza so we can have an adult night out alone! As well as camps, birthday parties and recitals! And Spring Session is Recital Session – so guess who is going to be tap dancing on the stage in June? That’s right! ME! Oh, lordy, I might have to post a video! I’m totally equal parts scared and excited to be on the stage again.
Here’s a shot from the Mini Show for Valentine’s Day! It was Abbey’s very first time on stage, and she had a BLAST! Watching her dance makes me so proud and so happy to share this art form with her. She’s so talented and she surprises me everyday with her skill level. I am elated that Jibe Studios has become our dance family!
If you have any questions or comments, feel free to contact Abby or Jennifer, or leave me a comment and I might be able to answer questions for you as well! I hope you sign up and come dance with us!
