My neck, my back, my Netflix and my snacks! I am currently, and always obsessed with Netflix binges. I love to sit and hit play and just binge out on some rad TV. Life around here would cease to exist if I binged on Netflix all day, but every now and then – mostly at night while I am working on the blog – I can get down with some good shows. I am contastly having people asking me for TV show recommendations, what I like, what I watch, and what I think is worth an 8 hour binger. Here is a list of the top 10 shows I’ve been binging on the past few months.
Arrested Development – (2003 – )
The Plot in One Sentence : Do gooder son, Michael Bluth strives to keep his crazy, greedy, worthless family together, despite their materialistic, selfish natures.
This show is quite possibly my favorite show of all time. You either get it and love it and can’t live without it, or you think it’s the dumbest show in the history of the world. If you’re part of the latter, it’s entirely possible that we can’t be friends. It is my life’s mission to insert as many AD quotes into my daily conversations as humanly possible. I’ve binged on this show several times since it came on, first on DVD, and now on Netflix. It was cancelled in 2006, but was brought back with Netflix exclusive episodes in 2013. The fifth season was just announced. STEVE HOLT!
Favorite Episode : Mr. F
Desperate Housewives (2004-2012)
The Plot in One Sentence : Four women’s lives intertwine while living on quaint, idealistic Wisteria Lane, where everything isn’t what it ultimately seems.
This show is the ultimate in guilty pleasure binge watching. Lies, murder, cheating, stealing, and all sorts of gossip dripping drama. I love this show. It’s hilarious, ridiculous and amazing. It’s a great show for binging start to finish – and since it’s 8 seasons, it’s a lot of episodes to get under your belt.
Favorite Episode : You Could Drive a Person Crazy
Doctor Who (2005 – )
The Plot in One Sentence : A time-travelling alien and his human companion, who save the world from ultimate destruction on a daily basis.
The original Doctor Who shows started in 1963, and ran until 1989. After unsuccessful attempts to revive the show, it was relaunched in 2005 under the current format. I know that if you spend any sort of time on the internet, that you’ve heard about this show. And I want to tell you that it is amazing! It’s loaded with all sorts of amazing guest stars and twisty surprising plot points. It’s part Sci-Fi, part British humor, part snarky hilarious guilty pleasure. If you’ve never thought about giving it a chance, or tried and couldn’t get into it, I say try watching the episode “Vincent” and see if I can’t change your mind.
Favorite Episode : Don’t Blink
Friends (1994 – 2004)
The Plot in One Sentence : Six twenty-something friends, live, laugh and love in New York City while dealing with relationships, babies and growing older.
If you weren’t one of those people who watched Friends when it was on TV, the best news ever, that the entire 10 seasons is on Netflix, is a godsend for you. Granted, it’s pretty much ALWAYS on TV, but now you can watch it from beginning to end, on repeat in the background whenever you want. During it’s 10 year run, it was loaded with huge guest stars, hilarious plot points and unforgettable memories of your 6 favorite friends. This is another show that I’ve binge watched over and over and have seen every episode at least 3 times each.
Favorite Episode : The One with the Rumor
Garfunkle and Oates (2014 – )
The Plot in One Sentence : Two quirky folk singing comediennes, write hilarious songs about their everyday life, while trying to make it big in musical comedy.
I randomly chanced upon this on day on Netflix because it was rated highly for me. Did you know the stars on Netflix is actually was Netflix assumes you would rate it and not what others have rated it? Cuz I seriously LOVE the feature! Anyway, this was rated highly and it stars those two girls from other other things you like, so why not right? I absolutely loved this show and binge watched all the episodes in 2 days. I was actually BUMMED when I was done! I can’t wait for season 2, because their songs like “Pregnant Women are Smug”, are hilarious.
Favorite Episode : Speechless
Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt (2015 – )
The Plot in One Sentence : Freed from an underground Apocalypse cult, cluelessly adorable Kimmy Schmidt moves to NYC and tries to start over and blend into a world she isn’t mentally prepared for.
Netflix has some amazing original content, and if you’re a fan of Tiny Fey, or 30 Rock, then you might just fall in love with this show too. I couldn’t stop watching Ellie Kemper (of The Office and Bridesmaids) as Kimmy Schmidt, an escaped kidnapping victim, forced to live in an underground bunker for the better part of 15 years. She relocates to New York and tries to resume a normal life. It’s hilarious, and filled with tons of dry witty humor.
Favorite Episode : Kimmy Goes to School!
Orange is the New Black (2013- )
The Plot in One Sentence : Piper Chapman is sentenced to 15 months in a women’s prison for drug related crimes that happened a decade ago.
If you haven’t seen OITNB yet, you must be living under a rock. This show is so fantastically awesome – and since it’s a Netfliux orignial series, it is just MADE for binge watching! I cannot recommend this highly enough if you want a gritty show with humor and drama. It’s got an amazing cast, fantastic acting and just an all around wonderful story. It sucks you in, chews you up and spits you out, begging for more. PLUS! They just announced Season 3 will hit Netflix on June 12th!
Favorite Episode : Fool Me Once
Parks and Recreation (2009 – 2015)
The Plot in One Sentence : Leslie Knope, an overly optimistic local government employee runs a team of rag tag public officials as they try to beautify the city of Pawnee, Indiana.
I held off for a long time on watching this, against multiple recommendations from my close friends who know my style. It wasn’t because I didn’t think I wouldn’t love it, but I wanted to be able to sit and really appreciate this show on it’s own without all the other similar shows I was watching at the time (The Office, 30 Rock). I can say that I love this show so much, and am so happy to be binge watching it vs waiting for the next episode week after week. It’s the show that I am CURRENTLY binge watching, so no spoilers!
Favorite Episode : Pawnee Rangers
Saturday Night Live (1975 – )
The Plot in One Sentence : Classic live late night sketch comedy show that has launched the careers of many famous comedians.
The ultimate and classic sketch show. I grew up watching SNL and have loved it a very very long time. It’s hard to explain exactly what makes it so fantastic, but binge watching this show on Netflix is amazing to me. It is a bummer that a lot of the content is missing due to copyright laws, but most of the sketches remain untouched. SNL has launched the careers of some of my absolute favorite comedians – Steve Martin, Chevy Chase, Julia Louis-Dreyfus, Will Ferrel, Tina Fey, Cheri Oteri, Amy Poehler, Kristen Wiig, and Jason Sudeikis to name a few.
Favorite Episode : Melissa McCarthy/Lady Antebellum
Twin Peaks (1990 – 1991)
The Plot in One Sentence : A quirky FBI agent investigates the even quirkier town in the Pacific Northwestern, Twin Peaks to discover “Who Shot Laura Palmer?”.
I never got into this show when it was on TV – mostly because David Lynch was way over my head at 9 years old and it was a highly inappropriate show for me to be watching. But recently, as it’s come on Netflix, I have found myself drifting in and out of episode bingers of Twin Peaks. If you’re familiar with ANY of David Lynch’s work, then you know what to expect – strange characters, mysterious plot points, twists and turns, a flair for the dramatics and a trainwreck-esque need to keep watching.
Favorite Episode : Episode #1.2
So there you have it! My current Top 10 favorite shows on Netflix to binge watch! Can you tell I enjoy comedy?
