I am a HUGE nerd. Geek. Dork. Whatever you want to call me, let’s have at it. I love me some Doctor Who, and Star Wars and over here at the Blevins house we’re big fans of Marvel. So when Guardians of the Galaxy came out last Tuesday , we rushed to Walmart of pick it up on the BluRay DVD combo pack. That way we can have family movie night on the big screen with the BluRay in the living room, or the kids can watch it on DVD in their room. Me, being the nerd I am, decided that I needed to get all crafty and do some cosplay makeup for the character of Gamora. She’s got green skin, so I decided to greenify myself (again!) for the sake of art.
I am not really a cosplayer in any sense – I think it would be super awesome, but I just don’t have the time to devote to it. So if you are, and you wanted an easy little step by step tutorial on how to transform yourself into Gamora for a Guardins of the Galaxy movie night, or even an upcoming con, check out how I did it, and then in the name of art, give it your own twist.
I first started by priming my face with moisturizer and primer. I used Green Kryolan Day Glo water based face paint for my face, and painted it on in several layers until I had the right amount of coverage. It takes a bit of time, so be patient. I like this brand because it’s light and it washes off easily. I also used this color when I did my Elphaba makeup 2 Halloweens ago. It lasted all night.
For her eyes, she wears a dark purple maroon colored shadow, blended into a soft brown on the lid. To do this, take a dark maroon color and dust into the crease, and work upwards. You might need a few layers to show up on the green. The brown is acheived by placing it in the crease and working down onto the lid.
Next you’re going to take a black shadow or powder, and lightly contour your face. Gamora has very prominent cheekbones so really contour and blend to create a nice illusion.
Finish off her eyes by lining them with thick black eyeliner in a cat eye shape.
Two coats of black mascara and a dusting of a translucent setting powder finishes the face. Now for the lips and her signature markings.
She has silvery markings all over her face. I used a movie still to get them as close as I could, and I used a small brush with some silver facepaint.
Using a dark lipstick (I used black and red mixed together) paint your lips. Careful not to get any on your teeth! I love how white my teeth look when I’m wearing black lipstick haha!
Gamora has dark hair with hot pink highlights, and since I haven’t had my hair look like that since I was 21, I used PicMonkey to edit my hair. A fancy cosplay wig would be great here!… and you’re done! Easy right?

This would be the perfect thing to wear to a Guardians of the Galaxy party! We’re actually going to be having a family movie night to watch it, no makeup and costumes required, since it’s so rainy today in San Diego! I grabbed everything we would need at Walmart, and we are totally prepared to snuggle up and have a great time. The DVD includes exclusive Character O-sleeves, an exclusive music zinepack and a 64 page magazine with cast and crew interviews. Plus exclusive behind-the-scenes photos and trivia and a custom “cassette” laptop decal.
We even grabbed a few toys for Christmas presents for my nephews. If you’re a Disney Infinity gamer, Walmart is offering a $5 Walmart gift card when you buy any Groot, Drax or Rocket Raccoon figure for the game!
So here is our little set up, waiting for the big one to get home from school. Think they will be stoked? Who could turn down candy and movies?
