Wanna know what makes everything better? Chocolate! Think about it, chocolate covered strawberries, chocolate covered bananas, chocolate covered cherries… are you sensing a theme yet? There is a reason these things exist in our lives, and it’s because chocolate makes everything better. It’s science and stuff.
So I thought to myself, “Self, why not add chocolate to fruit popcicles?” because HELLO! that’s sort of an obvious choice, right? I mean, you’re smacking yourself in the head right now wondering why you never thought to drizzle melted chocolate onto a delicious frozen treat, right? It’s OK. It’s sort of my job to take things outside the box and make you say “Duh.” Have I mentioned lately how much I love my job?
Anyway, it’s been in the high 80’s INSIDE my house this week. Sweltering. I am thisclose to boycotting all cooking and heating of things until, let’s say, October. Who’s with me!? Okay, maybe that’s a bit dramatic, but after a nasty splatter burn on my arm last weekend, I did threaten my family with the raw vegan lifestyle. So when it gets this hot, I am so inclined to stock up on frozen treats to cool me down when I don’t want to have to open a $300 AC bill.
So with all that in mind, I headed down to my local Kroger store (here on the Left Coast it’s called Ralphs) and serached the frozen aisle for something to tickle my fancy. I grabbed some Fruttare Fruit & Juice Bars, a bag of chocolate chips, a bag of white chips, some nuts and some coconut oil, and headed home to concoct myself a delicious treat while I sweated in my living room later that day. Read on and you’ll see I am a classic glutton for punishment.
So the first thing I did, was boil some water (see! boiling water in 90 degree weather…) I placed a glass bowl over the top and created a double boiler, added my chocolate chips and some coconut oil, stirring until melted. Clearly I am making my own self hardening chocolate shell… genius, RIGHT?!
I unwrapped a Banana & Milk Fruttare bar and drizzled the slightly cooled mixture over the top with a spoon and before it had a chance to harden on the frozen pop, I sprinkled some nuts on it! Bam! Frozen Banana flavored bar!
In another bowl I melted some white chips with coconut oil and made a white chocolate shell mix, and with the Cherry and Strawberry varieties, drizzled the dark chocolate and the white chocolate to make them extra fancy. I carefully laid each bar back into the freezer to fully set until later that night.
I mean come on, that’s pretty clever, you have to admit that. I totally elevated something that was already tasty, and made it fancy and pretty too! So now I am wondering what other delicious flavors I can come up with! White chocolate and graham crackers with the lime bars? Dark chocolate with pineapple?
What flavor combinations would you come up with?
